Northbridge Public Art

The rich diversity of cultures that have lived and worked in Northbridge over the past 100 years has meant that the area’s most vital ingredient is people. With its diverse ethnic origins, the community offers an exciting and varied array of shops, gourmet food and restaurants, alongside a variety of entertainment.

To maintain and enhance this environment, a range of public artworks are being developed and will feature throughout the area, reflecting the rich variety of people and cultures.

Public Art Hoardings
The East Perth Redevelopment Authority has earmarked 1% of construction costs of civic projects for public art, in support of the Department for Culture and the Arts’ initiative: ‘Percent for Art Scheme’.

The $20,000 public art hoardings erected in Plateia Hellas form part of this commitment.

Artist, Christine Martin, was commissioned by EPRA to depict Greek cultural images on a series of 8 hoardings in recognition of the vital role the Greek community has played in the history of the Northbridge precinct. The hoardings will act as a colourful backdrop for events in the Plateia as well as a visual barrier to nearby construction works.

The public art will promote Plateia Hellas as a community meeting place, enhance the area’s ethnic diversity and help to develop a strong sense of community.

Nexus at Plateia Hellas

The unique Plateia Hellas on Lake Street Northbridge, with its striking public artwork of decorative polished concrete pillars with complementary water features was completed in May 2003.

Created by Simon Gauntlett, the Nexus is the artistic focal point of Plateia Hellas. The seven terrazzo columns are based on classical Greek architecture and create an impressive urban feature.  Seven illuminated water jets trace the original watercourse for which Lake Street is named. The sandblasted frieze draws on the tradition of storytelling and celebrates the Greek community’s role in the development of Northbridge.

Lighting at the Plateia incorporates in-ground uplights on each side of the decorative concrete panels, highlighting appearance, form and texture. The art installation is accessible to the public and can be appreciated at any time of day or night. The innovative illumination of the Plateia, designed by Engineering Technology Consultants, received an award of commendation in the annual IES Lighting Society awards in October 2003.
