History and Heritage

The New Northbridge project is rich in character buildings, architecturally and historically significant to Perth and even Australia. They date back to the early days of the city from the Victorian and Federation eras.

Because Northbridge is one of Perth's oldest suburbs, a key objective of the project was to enhance and protect the heritage and cultural values in the area. Character develops over time.  It is a mix of people, places, history and events that you can’t create instantly.

To retain this character, 70 significant heritage buildings have been retained as part of the project. Four distinct and valuable heritage precincts were recognised within the area.

These include the Lindsay and Money Streets Heritage Precinct, Aberdeen Street Heritage Precinct, Parry Street Heritage Precinct and the Talbot Hobbs Heritage Precinct.

Several of the heritage buildings have been successfully restored and sold as homes and offices.

Notable heritage buildings within the project area which have been retained include:

  • Wallpaper World – Corner of Newcastle and Palmerston Streets
  • Tom Burke House – Newcastle Street
  • Talbot Hobbs Heritage Precinct – Corner of Newcastle and Palmerston Streets
  • 62, 64, 66 Aberdeen Street cottages
  • The Union Bakery – Lindsay Street

A number of incentives are available to owners and developers of heritage places. Please refer to the East Perth Redevelopment Authority's Hertiage Incentives Information Sheet for further information on these incentives.
