About New Northbridge

New Northbridge is a 27 hectare urban renewal project in the heart of one of Perth’s most established neighbourhoods. The cultural diversity, colour, excitement and round the clock buzz of living and working in the New Northbridge is proving increasingly attractive for many people.

While it has long been the cultural and entertainment heart of the city, recent high quality residential developments together with stunning new commercial projects are turning the already popular area into a cosmopolitan precinct with a European feel.

The East Perth Redevelopment Authority was assigned responsibility for the urban renewal of land directly above the Northbridge Tunnel following an extension to the boundary of the East Perth Redevelopment Area in 1999. The 27 hectares of land that makes up the New Northbridge development was created as a result of the construction of the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel.

The New Northbridge is home to many buildings of architectural and historical significance. Recognising the importance of the area and the tremendous opportunity to build on Northbridge’s fascinating character and heritage, EPRA commissioned extensive studies of every building in the development area.

The findings were used to guide the development and the results are now being enjoyed by both the new and existing residents of Northbridge.

The East Perth Redevelopment Authority's objectives for the project were to:

  • undertake the renewal of land affected by the Graham Farmer Freeway;
  • enhance and protect the heritage and cultural values of the area;
  • optimise returns; and
  • provide land and property redevelopment opportunities.

The redevelopment re-establishes linkages with the lively entertainment and business area and the surrounding residential areas, retaining and building on the unique character of Northbridge. Innovative urban design and a land use strategy have provided opportunities for purchasers, investors and developers to take part in the transformation of this under-utilised land into a vibrant cosmopolitan community.
